Newborn Care: First Few Weeks
The first few weeks with a newborn can feel busy and tiring. Most of the care is simple, regular and practical.
Everyday care
- Wash hands before handling the baby.
- Keep the cord area clean and dry until it falls off.
- Keep the baby comfortably warm, not overheated.
- Support the head and neck while lifting the baby.
Feeding and sleep
Newborns feed often and sleep in short stretches, day and night. This pattern is normal and slowly settles over the coming weeks.
Warning signs - consult a doctor
- Poor feeding or continuous sleepiness.
- Fever, or a baby who feels unusually cold.
- Fast or difficult breathing, grunting.
- Yellow colour of skin or eyes that is increasing.
- Very few wet nappies.
- Continuous vomiting, loose motions, or blood in stools.
- Redness, discharge or bad smell from the cord area.
For parents
Rest whenever the baby sleeps and accept help at home. If a mother feels persistently low, anxious or unable to cope, please speak to a doctor. It is a common and treatable concern.
