Newborn Feeding Basics
Feeding is the biggest question for most new parents. A few simple points can help you feel more confident in the first weeks.
How often do newborns feed?
Newborn babies feed frequently, often 8 to 12 times in 24 hours, including at night. Feeding on demand is normal in the early weeks.
Signs that feeding is going well
- The baby is passing urine several times a day.
- The baby is generally settled after feeds.
- Weight gain is steady when checked at the clinic.
Common concerns
- Bringing up small amounts of milk after feeds is common.
- Short crying spells are normal and do not always mean hunger.
- Cracked or painful nipples can often be helped with correct positioning.
When to ask a doctor
- The baby is not feeding or is very sleepy.
- Very few wet nappies.
- Continuous vomiting, or vomiting that is green or forceful.
- Yellow colour of skin or eyes increasing.
- Any concern about weight gain.
