Safe Sleep Basics for Babies
A safe sleep space is one of the simplest ways to reduce risk for a small baby at home.
General points
- Place the baby on the back to sleep, unless your doctor advises otherwise.
- Use a firm, flat surface.
- Keep soft pillows, thick blankets and loose cloth away from the baby's face.
- Do not let anyone smoke near the baby.
- Avoid overheating the room or covering the baby too much.
Sleeping in the same room
Many families sleep in the same room as the baby. Keep the baby's own sleeping space clear and safe, and avoid sleeping with the baby on a sofa or soft surface.
Ask a doctor if
- The baby has breathing pauses or noisy breathing during sleep.
- The baby is unusually difficult to wake.
- You have any doubt about the safest sleep arrangement for your baby.
