Breastfeeding Basics for New Mothers
Breastfeeding is natural, but it is also a skill that both mother and baby learn together. Small corrections often make a big difference.
Getting started
- Hold the baby close, with the head and body in a straight line.
- The baby's mouth should take in the nipple and a good part of the dark area around it.
- Feeding should not be painful. Pain often means the position needs correction.
- Feed on demand, day and night, in the early weeks.
Looking after yourself
- Drink fluids regularly and eat normal home food.
- Rest whenever possible.
- Tell your doctor about any medicine you are taking.
When to ask for help
- The baby is not gaining weight.
- Very few wet nappies.
- Painful, cracked nipples or a hard, painful, red breast with fever.
- You feel the baby is not feeding well.
Note
If breastfeeding is not possible or not enough for medical reasons, please discuss feeding options with the doctor rather than deciding on your own.
