Fever in Children: When Should Parents Consult a Doctor?
Fever is one of the most common reasons parents bring a child to the clinic. Fever itself is not an illness. It is a sign that the body is responding to something, most often an infection. Knowing what to watch can help you stay calm and act at the right time.
What is fever?
A body temperature of 100.4 F (38 C) or above is generally considered fever. Use a digital thermometer and note the time and the reading each time you check.
What parents can do at home
- Give small amounts of fluids often, so the child does not become dry.
- Dress the child in light clothing. Do not cover the child heavily.
- Allow the child to rest.
- Write down the temperature readings and the timings.
- Give medicine only in the dose advised by a doctor for your child's weight.
When to consult a doctor
- A baby below 3 months has any fever.
- Fever lasts more than 24 hours despite home care.
- The child is very sleepy, very dull or difficult to wake.
- The child refuses feeds or is passing very little urine.
- Breathing is fast or difficult.
- Fits (convulsions), rash, continuous vomiting or severe pain.
- You feel the child looks unwell even if the temperature is not very high.
Please avoid
- Giving leftover antibiotics or someone else's medicine.
- Changing doses on your own.
- Waiting when the child looks unwell just because the fever came down.
